Arizona license renewal for older drivers
Arizona licenses do not expire until age 65. The photo and eye test are updated every 12 years. Drivers 60 and older receive a five-year license. MVD lists no age-based road test.
Preparing for the renewal test
If you need to take a written or signs test to renew, it covers the same handbook as new drivers' tests. Our Arizona practice tests and road signs test are free to use, and the read-aloud button can help if small print is hard to read.
Rules that may have changed since you first got your license
Some of the rules in today's Arizona handbook are newer than many drivers' first test. Worth a look before renewal:
- Phones: All drivers: may not hold or support a wireless device, read or write texts, or watch/record/broadcast video while driving; hands-free/voice-to-text allowed; a handheld device may be used only to report an emergency (manual p.24). Class G (graduated) license holders, first 6 months: no wireless devices at all except in emergencies or for audible navigation (MVD teen page). The pages read do not state a separate device rule for instruction-permit holders.
- Move over: Move Over Law (A.R.S. 28-775): move over one lane for any vehicle with flashing lights pulled to the side of the road; if not safe, slow down and use caution. Applies to emergency, police, tow, highway maintenance and private vehicles. Stay at least 500 feet behind a fire vehicle and 300 feet behind a police vehicle responding to an emergency.
- School buses: Stop for a school bus loading or unloading (flashing lights and stop arm) regardless of direction; not required when traveling the opposite direction on a divided roadway with a physical barrier (striping alone does not count). Stay stopped until the bus moves or the lights and arm are off.
- Alcohol: the limit for adult drivers is 0.08%.
Vision standard
Uncorrected vision of 20/40 or better in at least one eye for an unrestricted license; those who need glasses or contacts to meet it get a 'B' restriction (corrective lenses required). A visual field test is also given.
