The Kentucky KSP / KYTC knowledge test
Written knowledge test given by Kentucky State Police at regional testing offices, by appointment only (appointments released Mon-Fri at 8 a.m., up to three weeks out). Vision screening first. Covers driving rules, regulations, procedures and highway signs; the Kentucky Driver Manual is the only approved study source.
Signs are a portion of the written test that must be answered from the applicant's own knowledge even on an oral test.

The official handbook
Everything on the test comes from the Kentucky Driver Manual, also available in Spanish. Read it alongside the practice tests. Our chapter-by-chapter guide.
Renewing your license
No age-based road or written test. A vision screening is required at every renewal (free at a Regional Office). Licenses are 4- or 8-year; drivers 21+ expire 31 days after the birthday. Aging drivers may request a driving evaluation through the Medical Review Board; KYTC lists Over 55 Driver Improvement Courses. Instead of the free office screening, a driver may submit a TC 94-202 Driver Vision Testing Certification Form from a vision specialist or KYTC-credentialed provider, completed within the past 12 months.
