How the simulator works

  • Every attempt draws a new random set of 30 questions from across the handbook.
  • No feedback until you finish, as in the real test. Then you see your score and every question you missed, with the explanation and handbook reference.
  • Your results stay in this browser. After three passes in a row you'll see "You're ready".
  • The BMV doesn't publish a time limit for this test, so the clock just shows how long you've taken.

About the real Maine BMV test

Written (digital) knowledge test at BMV branches. The BMV schedules it after your permit application is processed and mails an appointment notice within about three weeks. It covers rules of the road, signs, pedestrian and bicycle safety, Maine OUI laws and distracted driving.

  • Languages: The digital testing system offers Arabic, Canadian French, English, French, Lingala, Portuguese, Somali, Spanish and Swahili. Since February 1, 2026, the BMV provides a free professional interpreter for other languages (scheduling may take 4 weeks or more).
  • Fee: $35 Class C (and motorcycle) permit examination fee, paid with the learner's permit application. Rescheduling is free up to 48 hours before the test.
  • Audio or oral test: Since February 1, 2026, the BMV provides a free professional interpreter for the written test in languages the digital system does not offer.

On test day

  • Bring the documents on the Maine what-to-bring list, and check you meet the minimum age (15 (driver education required if under 18)).
  • You'll take a vision test first: Visual acuity at least 20/40 in the better seeing eye (and 20/100 in the fellow eye under exceptional-case criteria) and at least 110 degrees of continuous horizontal field. Corrective lenses required if uncorrected acuity is worse than 20/40 in both eyes; daylight-only driving for 20/50 to 20/100 in the better eye. Screening is free at the written exam or by an eye care specialist on form MVE-103. Bring your glasses or contacts if you wear them.
  • Read each question and every answer to the end before choosing; watch for words like "not" and "except".
  • Review the hardest questions the night before: exact numbers are where most points are lost.
