Massachusetts RMV exam simulator

Take the knowledge test the way the RMV gives it: 25 questions picked at random from all 300 of ours, 18 correct to pass, with a 25-minute time limit. You only see your answers at the end. Pass three in a row and you're ready for the real thing.

How the simulator works

  • Every attempt draws a new random set of 25 questions from across the handbook.
  • No feedback until you finish, as in the real test. Then you see your score and every question you missed, with the explanation and handbook reference.
  • Your results stay in this browser. After three passes in a row you'll see "You're ready".
  • The timer matches the real test's 25 minutes; when it runs out, the test ends.

About the real Massachusetts RMV test

The learner's permit exam is multiple choice. Take it on touch-screen automated testing station (ATS) kiosks at RMV Full Service Centers, or online after your application appointment (computer with a camera; not a phone or tablet). It covers rules of the road, road signs, alcohol misuse, suspensions and Junior Operator License violations. Allow about one minute per question.

  • Languages: Class D/M exams: Albanian, American Sign Language (service center only), Arabic, Armenian, Burmese, Cambodian (Khmer), Cape Verdean Creole, Chinese (simplified and traditional), English, Farsi, French, German, Greek, Gujarati, Haitian Creole, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Kiswahili, Korean, Laotian, Nepali, Pashto, Polish, Portuguese (Brazilian), Russian, Serbo-Croatian, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog/Filipino, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Urdu, Vietnamese. CDL exams English only.
  • Attempts: If you fail, you pay the $30 exam fee again for another exam. If your permit expires, you must retake the exam.
  • Fee: $30 learner's permit exam fee (charged again for each retake)
  • Audio or oral test: Audio exams are offered on the ATS and online in all Class D/M languages (bring headphones), with a 25-minute limit. A reader (one-on-one verbal exam), extended time or a paper exam is available as a disability accommodation: request an oral exam at 857-368-8105, and extended time or a paper exam through the Service Center manager. Foreign-language oral exams can be requested from RMV Interpreter Services.

On test day

  • Bring the documents on the Massachusetts what-to-bring list, and check you meet the minimum age (16).
  • You'll take a vision test first: At least 20/40 in the better eye (corrected) and at least 120 degrees horizontal peripheral vision (both eyes) for a full license; 20/50 to 20/70 in the better eye may qualify for a daylight-only license. Screening covers acuity, color and peripheral vision; a Vision Screening Certificate from an eye doctor may be accepted instead. Bring your glasses or contacts if you wear them.
  • Read each question and every answer to the end before choosing; watch for words like "not" and "except".
  • Review the hardest questions the night before: exact numbers are where most points are lost.
