Mississippi license renewal for older drivers

DPS lists no age-based testing. Licenses may be renewed up to six months before expiration (online renewal available). If expired more than 60 months, you must retake the knowledge exam.

Preparing for the renewal test

If you need to take a written or signs test to renew, it covers the same handbook as new drivers' tests. Our Mississippi practice tests and road signs test are free to use, and the read-aloud button can help if small print is hard to read.

Rules that may have changed since you first got your license

Some of the rules in today's Mississippi handbook are newer than many drivers' first test. Worth a look before renewal:

  • Phones: Texting, writing, sending or reading text messages and reading or posting to social networking sites on a hand-held phone while driving are prohibited for all drivers; hands-free devices recommended for calls; the manual advises not using phones for calls or texting. Hardship licensees may not use a cell phone at all, including hands-free.
  • Move over: If an emergency vehicle with lights or siren is parked along a four-lane highway, merge into the lane away from it if safe; otherwise slow down and prepare to stop. Pull to the extreme right shoulder for approaching emergency vehicles.
  • School buses: Stop at least 10 feet from a school bus with red lights flashing and/or stop sign extended, regardless of direction of travel, until children have crossed and the bus resumes motion with lights off and stop sign retracted. Exception: on a highway of four or more lanes with at least two lanes in each direction, traffic going the opposite direction may continue; also no stop needed when the bus is in a loading zone where pedestrians may not cross.
  • Alcohol: the limit for adult drivers is 0.08%.
