What to bring to the Montana MVD permit test

Bring the right documents and you can take the knowledge and vision tests on the same visit. The official requirements change from time to time, so check the MVD's own page before you go.

For the learner's permit and knowledge test

  • Proof of identity (full legal name and date of birth)
  • Proof of Montana residency (one document showing physical address; REAL ID needs two)
  • Proof of authorized presence (e.g. U.S. birth certificate or passport)
  • Social Security number (you need to know it; the card is not required)
  • Under 18: parental consent
  • License fee

Fees

  • Learner license / Class D license (until 21st birthday): $5.00 per year plus 3% admin fee; MVD totals: $36.57 at 14½, $31.42 at 15, $26.27 at 16, $21.12 at 17

The vision test

At least 20/40 vision in at least one eye, with or without corrective lenses.

Bring your glasses or contact lenses if you wear them to see clearly.

For the road test

  • Valid learner license (NCLP)
  • Proof of identity, residency and authorized presence again (teens: even if already provided)
  • Under 18: driving log (paper or digital) and completed Graduated Driver Licensing Parent/Legal Guardian Certification (21-1600)
  • Proof of current registration for the test vehicle
  • Proof of insurance (physical card or digital)
  • A test vehicle without mechanical issues (no cracked windshield; working taillights, brake lights and turn signals)

What happens on the road test

After you pass: your permit

  • Hold it for at least 6 months and 1 day on the learner license (NCLP) before the first-year restricted license, with no traffic violations or alcohol or drug offenses in that time before the road test.
  • Log 50 hours of supervised driving, 10 of them at night.
  • Supervised by a licensed parent or legal guardian, or (with their permission) a licensed driver 18 or older, or a licensed driver education instructor, seated beside the driver
  • Everyone in the vehicle must wear a seatbelt
  • Under 18: parent/guardian/responsible adult consent form accepting financial responsibility
  • Learner license valid one year
  • The parent/guardian/responsible adult logs the 50 supervised hours (10 at night)

Before you go

Take a practice test or two the day before, and the exam simulator to check you can pass in the real format. Bring originals, not photocopies, unless the MVD says copies are accepted.
