Texas DPS exam simulator

The DPS doesn't publish how many questions its test has, but you need 70% to pass, so the simulator gives you 25 random questions from all 327 of ours with 18 correct to pass. You only see your answers at the end. Pass three in a row and you're ready for the real thing.

How the simulator works

  • Every attempt draws a new random set of 25 questions from across the handbook.
  • No feedback until you finish, as in the real test. Then you see your score and every question you missed, with the explanation and handbook reference.
  • Your results stay in this browser. After three passes in a row you'll see "You're ready".
  • The DPS doesn't publish a time limit for this test, so the clock just shows how long you've taken.

About the real Texas DPS test

Class C knowledge exam ("written exam") for all original applicants, taken at a driver license office or, for teens, during the classroom portion of driver education (concurrent method: after the first 6 hours; block method: after all 24 hours). Separate Class M (motorcycle) and Class A/B rules exams exist.

  • Languages: English or Spanish only. Applicants must understand road signs written in English. Translators may help only before and after a test, not during it.
  • Attempts: Fee is paid before any exam. If the knowledge and driving exams are not passed on the first attempt, the application is held for 90 days; after 90 days or three failed exams, a new application and fee are required.
  • Fee: No separate knowledge-test fee; the license fee is paid before testing (learner license under 18: $15 + $1 administrative fee = $16; Class C 18+: $33).
  • Audio or oral test: Oral tests are given when needed. Written and oral exams are offered in English and Spanish only. Hearing-impaired applicants may bring a translator or ask DPS for a certified ASL interpreter at least four business days ahead.

On test day

  • Bring the documents on the Texas what-to-bring list, and check you meet the minimum age (15 (learner license; driver education classroom may start at 14)).
  • You'll take a vision test first: Without corrective lenses, 20/40 or better in each eye and both together means no restriction. With corrective lenses, 20/50 or better in the best eye or both together means a corrective-lenses restriction. 20/60 or 20/70 in the best eye means corrective lenses plus daytime-only driving, a 45 mph limit and other restrictions as advisable. Worse than 20/70 in the best eye fails. One eye: 20/25 or better without lenses means no restriction. Color vision is checked on all original applicants. Bring your glasses or contacts if you wear them.
  • Read each question and every answer to the end before choosing; watch for words like "not" and "except".
  • Review the hardest questions the night before: exact numbers are where most points are lost.
