How the simulator works

  • Every attempt draws a new random set of 25 questions from across the handbook.
  • No feedback until you finish, as in the real test. Then you see your score and every question you missed, with the explanation and handbook reference.
  • Your results stay in this browser. After three passes in a row you'll see "You're ready".
  • The DMV doesn't publish a time limit for this test, so the clock just shows how long you've taken.

No separate signs test; on the road test the examiner asks you to identify traffic signs (2 picked at random on the score sheet).

About the real West Virginia DMV test

Automated (computer) test at all DMV testing locations, given by driver examiners. It has at least 25 questions on driving knowledge, traffic rules, signs and markings. Phones, smart glasses and other electronics are not allowed in the exam room. You can also take the written test online (Know to Drive Online Testing) as part of the application; the certificate does not give you permission to drive.

  • If you fail: If you fail the knowledge or road skills test, you may not be tested twice within one week. Online (Know to Drive) test: wait seven days after failing; a passing online score is valid 6 months.
  • Fee: $7.50 per knowledge-test attempt
  • Audio or oral test: Audio version with headphones for reading-impaired applicants (headsets limited). DMV staff may not read or reword questions.

On test day

  • Bring the documents on the West Virginia what-to-bring list, and check you meet the minimum age (15 (Level 1 GDL instruction permit); 18+ regular Class E instruction permit).
  • You'll take a vision test first: 20/40 or better using both eyes, with or without conventional corrective lenses, and no serious visual defect (one eye: 20/40 in that eye). Bioptic/telescopic lenses may not be used to meet the acuity standard. Below standard: DLAB-Form 2 from a vision specialist; possible Driver's License Advisory Board review. Bring your glasses or contacts if you wear them.
  • Read each question and every answer to the end before choosing; watch for words like "not" and "except".
  • Review the hardest questions the night before: exact numbers are where most points are lost.
