Colorado DMV exam simulator

The DMV doesn't publish how many questions its test has, so the simulator gives you 25 random questions from all 296 of ours with 20 correct to pass, with a 60-minute time limit. You only see your answers at the end. Pass three in a row and you're ready for the real thing.

How the simulator works

  • Every attempt draws a new random set of 25 questions from across the handbook.
  • No feedback until you finish, as in the real test. Then you see your score and every question you missed, with the explanation and handbook reference.
  • Your results stay in this browser. After three passes in a row you'll see "You're ready".
  • The timer matches the real test's 60 minutes; when it runs out, the test ends.

About the real Colorado DMV test

The Driving Knowledge (written) Test covers the handbook: road signs, driving under the influence, driving rules, safety rules and legal items. Take it at a DMV office, at a driving school, or online as the @Home Driving Knowledge Test (desktop or laptop with a webcam; 60 minutes). Test-takers under 19 need an adult over 19 as proxy for the @Home test.

  • Languages: @Home test: English and Spanish.
  • Attempts: @Home: as many times as needed, but no more than twice in one day.
  • Fee: @Home test: $5 testing fee plus $1.50 card fee per attempt ($6.50). After a failed attempt, a state retest fee of $11.50 applies; it can be paid in an office or online. Check with the DMV before you go. Third-party testers may charge more.
  • Audio or oral test: The @Home test can be read aloud through your computer speakers. In an office, the testing machine can read the exam to you as an accommodation.

On test day

  • Bring the documents on the Colorado what-to-bring list, and check you meet the minimum age (15).
  • Read each question and every answer to the end before choosing; watch for words like "not" and "except".
  • Review the hardest questions the night before: exact numbers are where most points are lost.
