Colorado motorcycle permit practice test
It's based on Colorado Motorcycle Operator's Handbook (DR 2336). Practise Colorado's own motorcycle rules below, then the full motorcycle manual tests.
Colorado motorcycle rules
| Permit | Age 15-16 must complete an approved MOST course (Colorado State Patrol program per DMV page) before the permit. Under 18: parent/guardian Affidavit of Liability and Guardianship; hold the permit 12 months and be 16 before adding the endorsement. Supervision: immediate, proximate supervision by an adult 21+ with a Colorado motorcycle-endorsed license (minors need parent permission to ride with someone other than the MOST instructor or signing parent) (handbook p. 3; C.R.S. 42-2-106). |
|---|---|
| Skills test or course | Option 1: written exam, instruction permit, then the motorcycle skills test (MSF-based, six exercises; registered, insured motorcycle over 50cc; fails on points, unsafe act, four stalls) at a State Driver's License Office or certified third-party tester. Option 2: complete a MOST course and present the waiver card at a driver license office appointment, no further testing. Endorsement M (2- and 3-wheel) or 3 (3-wheel only). |
| Helmet law | Partial: operators and passengers under 18 must wear an approved helmet (C.R.S. 42-4-1502(4.5), handbook p. 3). |
| Eye protection | Required for all operators and passengers (C.R.S. 42-4-232, handbook p. 4). |
| Passengers | No state-specific passenger rule in the handbook beyond passenger foot pegs advice (p. 14); passengers under 18 need a helmet. |
| Lane splitting or filtering | Lane filtering legal (since 2023): a two-wheeled motorcycle may pass a vehicle in the same lane when that vehicle and vehicles in adjacent lanes are stopped and there is room to pass safely at no more than 15 mph (Colorado Driver Handbook DR 2337, 2025, p. 23). Lane splitting in moving traffic is not covered by this allowance. The 2018 motorcycle handbook (p. 9) predates the law and still says not to ride between rows of stopped cars. |
