What to bring to the Florida FLHSMV permit test
Bring the right documents and you can take the knowledge and vision tests on the same visit. The official requirements change from time to time, so check the FLHSMV's own page before you go.
For the learner's permit and knowledge test
- Primary identification (e.g., certified U.S. birth certificate or valid U.S. passport); originals or certified copies only
- Proof of Social Security number (e.g., Social Security card, W-2)
- Two documents showing your Florida residential address
- Name change documents (marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order) if your name has changed
- Parental Consent Form HSMV 71142 if under 18 and unmarried

The vision test
20/40 or better in each eye (with or without corrective lenses) meets the standard without referral; 20/50 or worse in either eye is referred to an eye specialist; 20/70 in either eye or both eyes together may pass after referral if the worse eye is better than 20/200; if one eye is blind or 20/200 or worse, the other eye must be 20/40 or better. Minimum field of vision 130 degrees. Telescopic lenses are not recognized. Applicants also take a hearing screening.
Bring your glasses or contact lenses if you wear them to see clearly.
For the road test
- Learner's license
- A vehicle with valid registration and license plate and proof of insurance that passes the examiner's safety inspection
- Certification of Minor Driving Experience (HSMV 71143) if under 18
After you pass: your permit
- Hold it for at least 12 months or until the 18th birthday, whichever comes first before the road test.
- Log 50 hours of supervised driving, 10 of them at night.
- Must always be accompanied by a licensed driver age 21 or older in the closest seat to the right of the driver
- Daylight hours only for the first three months; after three months may drive until 10 p.m.
- No moving-violation convictions in the 12 months from issue (one is allowed if adjudication was withheld) to move on to a driver license
Before you go
Take a practice test or two the day before, and the exam simulator to check you can pass in the real format. Bring originals, not photocopies, unless the FLHSMV says copies are accepted.
