How the simulator works

  • Every attempt draws a new random set of 40 questions from across the handbook.
  • No feedback until you finish, as in the real test. Then you see your score and every question you missed, with the explanation and handbook reference.
  • Your results stay in this browser. After three passes in a row you'll see "You're ready".
  • The DDS doesn't publish a time limit for this test, so the clock just shows how long you've taken.

The real test differs by age: Road Signs test (part 1): 20 questions, 15 to pass; Road Rules test (part 2): 20 questions, 15 to pass. The simulator uses the main format.

Road Signs test: 20 questions, 15 correct to pass, scored separately from the Road Rules test

About the real Georgia DDS test

Two separate tests taken on a computer at a DDS Customer Service Center, walk-in (no appointment): Road Signs (identify signs, signals and markers) and Road Rules (driver responsibility, laws, safe driving). Each has 20 questions, and you need 15 correct (75%) on each. Non-commercial applicants must be on the computer at least 30 minutes before the center closes.

  • Languages: The Road Rules and Road Signs tests are available in 26 languages: English, Albanian, Amharic, Arabic, Burmese, Chinese, Dari, Farsi, French, German, Haitian Creole, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Pashto, Portuguese (Brazil), Rohingya, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, Turkish, Urdu, Vietnamese, Wolof and Yoruba. Check with DDS before you go.
  • Attempts: You pay the $10 permit fee before testing, and again before every attempt. It is not refunded if you fail any part.
  • If you fail: After a 1st failure, wait until the next day. After a 2nd or later failure, wait 7 days. If you fail the road test because of an accident or traffic violation (ticketed or not), wait 30 days. All retests require an appointment and payment of the permit fee (no refunds).
  • Fee: $10 (Class CP learner's permit fee, paid before testing)
  • Audio or oral test: Oral exam by appointment for customers with reading disabilities. An interpreter for hearing-impaired customers can be scheduled.

On test day

  • Bring the documents on the Georgia what-to-bring list, and check you meet the minimum age (15).
  • You'll take a vision test first: 20/60 in one eye, with or without corrective lenses, and a horizontal field of vision of at least 140 degrees (non-commercial). Bring your glasses or contacts if you wear them.
  • Read each question and every answer to the end before choosing; watch for words like "not" and "except".
  • Review the hardest questions the night before: exact numbers are where most points are lost.
