Georgia license renewal for older drivers

Drivers 64 and older must pass a vision screening at each renewal, in person or online. Licenses are issued for 8 years. DDS lists no age-based knowledge or road test.

Preparing for the renewal test

If you need to take a written or signs test to renew, it covers the same handbook as new drivers' tests. Our Georgia practice tests and road signs test are free to use, and the read-aloud button can help if small print is hard to read.

Rules that may have changed since you first got your license

Some of the rules in today's Georgia handbook are newer than many drivers' first test. Worth a look before renewal:

  • Phones: Hands-Free Georgia Act (HB 673): no driver may hold or support a phone or electronic device; no writing, sending or reading texts, email or internet data; no watching or recording video. Use only hands-free/mounted. Penalties: 1st 1 point and up to $50; 2nd 2 points and up to $100; 3rd+ 3 points and up to $150 (manual PDF p.26). The manual does not state separate phone rules for permit/Class D drivers.
  • Move over: Move over to the next lane (leaving a buffer lane) for a stopped emergency, wrecker, highway construction, active sanitation or utility service vehicle showing flashing yellow, amber, white, red or blue lights; if you cannot, slow down below the speed limit and be prepared to stop. Fine up to $500 for a first offense. Postal and active sanitation vehicles: change lanes or slow to at least 10 mph under the limit or 25 mph, whichever is more, and be prepared to stop; fine up to $250 (manual PDF p.19, p.26).
  • School buses: When a school bus stops with red lights and stop arm, all traffic in both directions must stop on two-lane roads, two-lane roads with a center turn lane, four-lane roads without a median, and roads of four or more lanes with a center turn lane; on a divided highway with a median, only traffic following the bus must stop. Stay stopped until the bus moves or turns off its signals and passengers have cleared the road. Penalties: mandatory court appearance, up to $1,000, up to 6 points (manual PDF p.19, p.45). No stopping distance is stated.
  • Alcohol: the limit for adult drivers is 0.08%.
