Hawaii HDOT exam simulator
Take the knowledge test the way the HDOT gives it: 30 questions picked at random from all 275 of ours, 24 correct to pass. You only see your answers at the end. Pass three in a row and you're ready for the real thing.
30 questions · 24 to pass
How the simulator works
- Every attempt draws a new random set of 30 questions from across the handbook.
- No feedback until you finish, as in the real test. Then you see your score and every question you missed, with the explanation and handbook reference.
- Your results stay in this browser. After three passes in a row you'll see "You're ready".
- The HDOT doesn't publish a time limit for this test, so the clock just shows how long you've taken.
The real test differs by age: Online learner's permit test, as described by HDOT (all counties): 25 questions, null to pass; Online learner's permit test, as described by Honolulu CSD (page updated 2026-08-05): 30 questions, null to pass. The simulator uses the main format.
About the real Hawaii HDOT test
The car (Category 3) written test covers rules of the road and the meaning of traffic control devices. It is given with a vision screening at a county driver licensing center. On Kauai the test has 30 multiple-choice questions, and you fail with more than 6 errors. You can also take the test online from a desktop or laptop with a webcam (no phones, tablets or touchscreens), with a 1-hour time limit. Honolulu says the online test has 30 questions and that you then have 60 days to finish the permit at a county office. Check with your county before you go.
- Languages: The online test is in English and Spanish and can be read aloud in either language. Office tests may be given in other languages approved by the director. HDOT offers free interpreters (808-831-7921).
- If you fail: Wait 7 days after a failed knowledge test. Under state rules, a retest after a failed knowledge or road test must be at least one week and no more than thirty days later.
- Fee: Set by each county. Honolulu: written test $2; online permit test $12 ($2 county fee + $10 transaction/card fee); oral test $10.
- Audio or oral test: If you have difficulty reading English, you can be tested orally or by other means. In Honolulu, the oral test is given at the Kapalama Driver Licensing Center and costs $10.
On test day
- Bring the documents on the Hawaii what-to-bring list, and check you meet the minimum age (15½).
- You'll take a vision test first: Categories 1-3: 20/40 (Snellen) or better in one eye, corrected or uncorrected, and a horizontal field of 70 degrees or more using one eye. Outside rear-view mirror restriction if the binocular field is 70-139 degrees or only one eye meets 20/40; corrective lens restriction if needed. Vision test required for permits, new licenses and renewals; may be waived with an eye exam certificate from the last six months. Bring your glasses or contacts if you wear them.
- Read each question and every answer to the end before choosing; watch for words like "not" and "except".
- Review the hardest questions the night before: exact numbers are where most points are lost.
