North Carolina license renewal for older drivers

There is no special age-based test. Licenses issued at age 66 or older are valid for 5 years (8 years for ages 18-65). In-person renewals require the vision test and road signs test, and a road test may be required. Renewal by mail (a temporary license for residents out of state 30 days or more, including military) is not available to applicants older than 72. Eligible drivers can renew online; non-REAL ID licenses can be renewed online two times in a row.

Preparing for the renewal test

If you need to take a written or signs test to renew, it covers the same handbook as new drivers' tests. Our North Carolina practice tests and road signs test are free to use, and the read-aloud button can help if small print is hard to read.

Rules that may have changed since you first got your license

Some of the rules in today's North Carolina handbook are newer than many drivers' first test. Worth a look before renewal:

  • Phones: All drivers: it is unlawful to use a cell phone for texting or email while operating a vehicle on a public street, highway or public vehicular area. NC has no handheld-calling ban for drivers 18 and older (the 'Hands Free NC Act', S797, was filed in 2026 but is not law as of 2026-10-27). Drivers under 18, at every GDL level: no cell phone or other technology associated with a cell phone while driving, except to call about an emergency (emergency response operator, hospital/doctor/clinic, ambulance service, fire department, law enforcement, or a parent, legal guardian or spouse). School bus drivers may not use a cell phone while driving (handbook PDF pp. 14-15, 43).
  • Move over: When an emergency vehicle with flashing lights and siren approaches from either direction, pull to the right curb or edge and stop until it passes. This does not apply to opposite-direction traffic on a four-lane limited-access highway with a median. For an emergency or public service vehicle (police, fire, ambulance, rescue, or a vehicle assisting with wrecked or disabled vehicles) parked or standing within 12 feet of the road with warning lights on: with two or more lanes in your direction, move to a lane not next to it and stay there until safely past; with one lane, slow to a reduced, safe speed until completely past. Do not park within 100 feet of an emergency vehicle at a crash, and do not drive or park closer than one block to fire trucks answering an alarm (handbook PDF pp. 50-51).
  • School buses: Stop when a school bus shows its mechanical stop signal or flashing red lights to load or unload. Do not pass until the stop signal is withdrawn, the red lights are off and the bus has started to move. Traffic in both directions must stop on a two-lane road, a two-lane road with a center turning lane, and a four-lane road without a median. Only traffic following the bus must stop on a road of four or more lanes with a center turning lane, or a divided highway of four or more lanes with a median. The handbook gives no stopping distance. Passing a stopped school bus is 5 license points (handbook PDF pp. 36, 49-50).
  • Alcohol: the limit for adult drivers is 0.08%.

Vision standard

20/40 or better in at least one eye for an unrestricted license; a corrective-lens restriction is required if acuity is less than 20/40 in either eye or both eyes together. Corrective lenses must then be worn at all times while driving; driving without them is treated the same as driving without a license.
