Ohio BMV exam simulator
Take the knowledge test the way the BMV gives it: 40 questions picked at random from all 299 of ours, 30 correct to pass. You only see your answers at the end. Pass three in a row and you're ready for the real thing.
40 questions · 30 to pass
How the simulator works
- Every attempt draws a new random set of 40 questions from across the handbook.
- No feedback until you finish, as in the real test. Then you see your score and every question you missed, with the explanation and handbook reference.
- Your results stay in this browser. After three passes in a row you'll see "You're ready".
- The BMV doesn't publish a time limit for this test, so the clock just shows how long you've taken.
About the real Ohio BMV test
40 multiple-choice questions about motor vehicle regulations and traffic signs. Taken online through BMV Online Services, at a BMV Driver Examination Station, or at select Deputy Registrar License Agencies. Online applicants under 19 need a supervising adult proctor who passes identity verification; the vision screening is then done at the deputy registrar when buying the TIPIC.
- Languages: Text and audio in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Haitian Creole, Japanese, Russian, Somali and Spanish; American Sign Language in text and video. Other languages: schedule a proctored test with your own interpreter at a Driver Exam Station (applicants must be able to read traffic signs printed in English).
- Attempts: No limit in person (one attempt per day); online limited to two attempts in a six-month period.
- If you fail: One day (at least 24 hours).
- Audio or oral test: Audio versions of the test are available in all listed languages; accommodations at Driver Exam Stations include audio, printed paper and ASL knowledge tests.
On test day
- Bring the documents on the Ohio what-to-bring list, and check you meet the minimum age (15½).
- You'll take a vision test first: Binocular vision: 20/40 or better (both eyes together) for a license without vision restrictions; poorer than 20/40 but not worse than 20/70 allows daylight-only driving; worse than 20/70 is denied. Monocular vision (one eye 20/200 or better): 20/30 for no restriction; poorer than 20/30 but not worse than 20/60 daylight only; worse than 20/60 denied. Visual field: 70 degrees on both sides of center for an unrestricted license; at least 70 degrees on one side and 45 on the other qualifies with a mirror restriction. If you need glasses or contacts to meet the standard, you get a corrective-lens restriction. Bring your glasses or contacts if you wear them.
- Read each question and every answer to the end before choosing; watch for words like "not" and "except".
- Review the hardest questions the night before: exact numbers are where most points are lost.
