Oklahoma license renewal for older drivers

Service Oklahoma lists no age-based retesting. Licenses are issued for 4 or 8 years and can be renewed up to 1 year early (online renewal available). Class D license, motorcycle endorsement and ID card fees are waived at 65 and older, and driving records are free for people over 65. Renewing a license expired less than 3 years needs no vision, written or driving test; expired more than 3 years requires all three.

Preparing for the renewal test

If you need to take a written or signs test to renew, it covers the same handbook as new drivers' tests. Our Oklahoma practice tests and road signs test are free to use, and the read-aloud button can help if small print is hard to read.

Rules that may have changed since you first got your license

Some of the rules in today's Oklahoma handbook are newer than many drivers' first test. Worth a look before renewal:

  • Phones: Texting while driving is illegal for all drivers (since 2015). Learner permit and intermediate license holders may be suspended or canceled for using a hand-held electronic device except for life-threatening emergencies. Commercial and public transit drivers may not make hand-held calls (p.61).
  • Move over: Move Over / Bernardo-Mills Law (47 O.S. 11-314): for any stationary vehicle with flashing lights on the roadside, move over a lane if safe, otherwise slow down and use caution; on two-lane roads slow down. For emergency vehicles with siren/lights, pull to the right edge clear of intersections and stop (pp.29-30).
  • School buses: Stop for a school or church bus with flashing red lights and/or STOP sign; stay stopped until the bus moves, the driver motions you on, or the lights go off/sign is pulled back. Not required when the bus is on a different roadway, in a loading zone by a controlled-access highway where pedestrians may not cross, or for approaching traffic on a divided highway. Failing to stop = mandatory one-year revocation; 4 points. No stopping distance stated (p.30).
  • Alcohol: the limit for adult drivers is 0.08%.

Vision standard

Class D: visual acuity of 20/60 or better in both eyes, or 20/50 or better in one eye, with or without glasses or contacts. A restricted license (speed, area, time) may be issued down to 20/100. Horizontal field of vision of at least 70 degrees (restricted license possible down to 60 degrees). Vision is screened for new drivers and for renewals of licenses expired more than 3 years; it is not required for renewals expired less than 3 years.
