Wisconsin DMV exam simulator
Take the knowledge test the way the DMV gives it: 50 questions picked at random from all 295 of ours, 40 correct to pass. You only see your answers at the end. Pass three in a row and you're ready for the real thing.
50 questions · 40 to pass
How the simulator works
- Every attempt draws a new random set of 50 questions from across the handbook.
- No feedback until you finish, as in the real test. Then you see your score and every question you missed, with the explanation and handbook reference.
- Your results stay in this browser. After three passes in a row you'll see "You're ready".
- The DMV doesn't publish a time limit for this test, so the clock just shows how long you've taken.
The real test differs by age: applicants aged 15-17 taking the test online at home (KnowToDrive): 50 questions, 40 to pass. The simulator uses the main format.
Highway Signs Test: 15 questions, 12 correct (80%) to pass; no appointment needed.
About the real Wisconsin DMV test
Walk-in (no appointment) touch-screen computer test at most DMV customer service centers (not Milwaukee Downtown or Sauk City); may also be given on paper. Takes about 45 minutes. Applicants 15-17 may take it online at home with a parent/guardian monitoring, on a laptop/desktop with webcam.
- Languages: Class D knowledge and signs tests (computer and written): English, American Sign Language, Burmese, Chinese, Croatian, Hmong, Polish, Russian, Serbian, Somali, Spanish. Online at-home test: English and Spanish.
- Attempts: The same test may be taken five times within a one-year period; after five failed attempts, special permission from DMV staff is needed. Online (ages 15-17): two attempts, then the third attempt must be at a DMV service center.
- If you fail: Applicants who fail may retake the test no sooner than the next day.
- Fee: Knowledge and signs tests at a DMV service center: $0. Online test for ages 15-17: $10 per attempt, pass or fail.
- Audio or oral test: Audio assist is available on request for the knowledge and signs tests.
On test day
- Bring the documents on the Wisconsin what-to-bring list, and check you meet the minimum age (15).
- You'll take a vision test first: For an unrestricted license you need visual acuity of at least 20/40 in one eye (with or without glasses or contacts) and a 70-degree field of vision from the center of each eye. The minimum for a regular license is 20/100 in at least one eye and a 20-degree field from center in at least one eye. Vision below 20/40 or 70 degrees may require a vision specialist referral, a skills test or license restrictions. Bioptic lenses may not be used to meet the standards. Bring your glasses or contacts if you wear them.
- Read each question and every answer to the end before choosing; watch for words like "not" and "except".
- Review the hardest questions the night before: exact numbers are where most points are lost.
