Alaska DMV exam simulator
Take the knowledge test the way the DMV gives it: 20 questions picked at random from all 276 of ours, 16 correct to pass, with a 25-minute time limit. You only see your answers at the end. Pass three in a row and you're ready for the real thing.
20 questions · 16 to pass · 25 minutes
How the simulator works
- Every attempt draws a new random set of 20 questions from across the handbook.
- No feedback until you finish, as in the real test. Then you see your score and every question you missed, with the explanation and handbook reference.
- Your results stay in this browser. After three passes in a row you'll see "You're ready".
- The timer matches the real test's 25 minutes; when it runs out, the test ends.
About the real Alaska DMV test
The General Knowledge Test is taken at an Alaska DMV office: 20 questions, 16 correct to pass, 25 minutes. You can also take it online through KnowToDrive (fees may apply) and get an immediate pass/fail result. It covers traffic laws, safe driving practices and highway signs from the manual. You may not use the manual during the test.
- Languages: The online KnowToDrive test is offered in multiple languages, with audio playback. If you understand English but have trouble reading, you may bring someone to read the questions to you. You must answer on your own.
- If you fail: If failed, the written test may be retaken the following day.
- Fee: There is no separate DMV fee for the knowledge test. The instruction permit costs $15. The online KnowToDrive test may charge a fee.
- Audio or oral test: The online test has audio playback. If you have trouble reading, you may bring someone to read the questions to you.
On test day
- Bring the documents on the Alaska what-to-bring list, and check you meet the minimum age (14).
- You'll take a vision test first: At least 20/40 in each eye or with both eyes together; corrective lenses must be worn if needed to qualify. A certified statement from a physician or optometrist may be submitted instead of the DMV vision test. Required for original, renewal and duplicate licenses. Bring your glasses or contacts if you wear them.
- Read each question and every answer to the end before choosing; watch for words like "not" and "except".
- Review the hardest questions the night before: exact numbers are where most points are lost.
