How the simulator works

  • Every attempt draws a new random set of 25 questions from across the handbook.
  • No feedback until you finish, as in the real test. Then you see your score and every question you missed, with the explanation and handbook reference.
  • Your results stay in this browser. After three passes in a row you'll see "You're ready".
  • The DOT doesn't publish a time limit for this test, so the clock just shows how long you've taken.

About the real Iowa DOT test

The operator knowledge test covers Iowa traffic laws and highway signs. Take it by appointment at a DOT location or county treasurer's office, or at a participating school (Skip the Trip). Students within 30 days of their 14th birthday and under 18 can take it at home on a laptop or desktop (not a phone or tablet), with a parent or guardian proctor who holds a valid Iowa driver's license.

  • If you fail: If you fail, you may retake the test when the examiner allows; there is no fixed waiting period. Test results are valid 180 days.
  • Fee: Iowa DOT does not list a separate test fee. The instruction permit costs $6 and is valid 4 years.
  • Audio or oral test: If you can't read or understand the written test, you may ask for an oral test, given by an examiner or an automated testing device.

On test day

  • Bring the documents on the Iowa what-to-bring list, and check you meet the minimum age (14).
  • You'll take a vision test first: Screened without lenses: 20/40 or better (both eyes or better eye) = no restriction; less than 20/40 but at least 20/70 = no driving when headlights are required. Screened with lenses: same thresholds plus a corrective-lens restriction. A driving test is required the first time acuity measures below 20/40, and an applicant who cannot reach 20/40 gets a two-year license. If an applicant cannot attain 20/40 in at least one eye (but can attain 20/70), the license is not issued until a vision specialist's report is submitted. Below 20/70 = denied (discretionary review possible). Left eye below 20/100 = outside mirrors on both sides. Binocular field at least 140 degrees = no restriction; 110-139 degrees (or one eye at least 100 degrees) = outside mirrors both sides; less = denied (discretionary review possible). Bring your glasses or contacts if you wear them.
  • Read each question and every answer to the end before choosing; watch for words like "not" and "except".
  • Review the hardest questions the night before: exact numbers are where most points are lost.
