Iowa DOT road test: what to expect
On-street driving test over a route preselected by the examiner; criteria explained on form 430024 before the test. For applicants under 18 a drive test at the DMV is required only if the driver education instructor requests it or the student completed parent-taught driver education. Test results valid 180 days; retest at the examiner's discretion.
How it's scored
Standard departmental score sheet; examiner explains the score at the end of the test.
Your car
- Safety technologies such as back-up cameras may assist during the test; convenience technologies (adaptive cruise control, automatic parallel parking) are not permitted
- Autocycles may not be used for a passenger-vehicle driving test
After you pass
Drivers under 17 (after 12 months violation-free with the intermediate license and 10 more supervised hours, 2 at night) get a provisional or junior license first. Its restrictions:
- No unsupervised driving between 12:30 a.m. and 5 a.m. (parent may sign waiver form 431170 for school or work)
- No cell phone or electronic device use while driving
- If the license shows a passenger restriction: for the first six months, no more than one unrelated minor passenger when driving without adult supervision
- No more passengers than seat belts
- Each conviction, crash or restriction violation delays the full license by 12 months
How to prepare
- Practise in the car you'll take the test in, including parking and backing up.
- Drive the kinds of roads near the test site with your supervising driver: intersections, lane changes, school zones.
- Check the car the day before: lights, signals, horn, brakes, mirrors, tires, seat belts, and current registration and insurance documents.
- On the day, signal every turn and lane change, check mirrors and blind spots visibly, and come to full stops behind the line.
