Missouri motorcycle rules
| Permit | Motorcycle instruction permit at 15 1/2 only after an approved motorcycle rider training course, with parental consent and the Class F and Class M written, vision and road sign tests; restricted to daylight, within 50 miles of home, 250 cc or smaller, no passengers. At 16+, no course required (Class F and M written tests if no license). Valid up to 6 months (182 days). Only one valid permit at a time. GDL applies to Class M applicants 16-18. Permit holders must wear helmets at any age. |
|---|---|
| Skills test or course | MSHP motorcycle skills test (four exercises: left turn and normal stop; cone weave and right turn from a stop; quick stop; obstacle swerve, the last two at about 15 mph), plus vision and road sign tests. An approved Missouri Motorcycle Rider Training Course (MRTC) replaces both the MSHP written knowledge test and skills test; the completion card is accepted for one year (RSMo 302.173). Out-of-state non-military course cards are not accepted. |
| Helmet law | Required for all operators and passengers under 26, and for any operator with an instruction permit regardless of age; riders 26+ with a license may ride without (RSMo 302.020.2, effective Aug. 28, 2020). Violation is an infraction with a fine up to $25; no one may be stopped solely to check helmet compliance. |
| Passengers | Instruction permit holders (15 1/2 permit) may not carry passengers; passengers under 26 must wear a helmet (RSMo 302.020). |
