What to bring to the Missouri DOR permit test

Bring the right documents and you can take the knowledge and vision tests on the same visit. The official requirements change from time to time, so check the DOR's own page before you go.

For the learner's permit and knowledge test

  • Proof of lawful status (e.g. certified U.S. birth certificate or U.S. passport)
  • Identity document with full legal name and date of birth
  • Social Security number document (card, W-2, 1099 or paystub)
  • Proof of Missouri residency (one document, or two for REAL ID; a parent may supply one for applicants under 21)
  • Name-change document if applicable
  • Driver Examination Record (Form 100) from MSHP showing passed tests
  • Parent, stepparent or legal guardian present to sign permission

Fees

  • Instruction permit: $10.00 (0-12 months)
  • Motorcycle permit: $12.75 or $10.00 (0-6 months)
  • Student permit (driver education course): $1.00

The vision test

Acuity at least 20/40 with either or both eyes; peripheral vision at least 55 degrees in each eye or 85 degrees in one eye. If both natural and corrected acuity are worse than 20/160, or combined peripheral is worse than 70 degrees, no driving test and no license.

Bring your glasses or contact lenses if you wear them to see clearly.

For the road test

  • Instruction permit; parent/grandparent/guardian to certify 40 hours of instruction at the license office
  • Vehicle with current plates and valid inspection sticker, working seat belts, doors that work for driver and examiner, clean safe examiner seat, working parking and foot brakes, working horn
  • Proof of financial responsibility (insurance)

What happens on the road test

After you pass: your permit

  • Hold it for at least 6 months (182 days) beginning the day after issuance, before an intermediate license before the road test.
  • Log 40 hours of supervised driving, 10 of them at night.
  • Under 16: drive only with a parent, stepparent, grandparent, legal guardian, qualified driving instructor, or a person at least 25 licensed at least 3 years with written parent or guardian permission, seated in the front seat
  • 16 or older: drive with a licensed driver at least 21 in the front seat
  • The driver and all passengers must wear seat belts
  • A parent, stepparent or legal guardian (or certified trainer of a federal residential job training program) must sign a permission statement at the license office
  • The MSHP driver examination record is not valid for driving; carry the permit
  • The permit may be renewed as many times as needed without retesting
  • A permit expired more than six months cannot be renewed without retesting; driving on an expired permit is never legal

Before you go

Take a practice test or two the day before, and the exam simulator to check you can pass in the real format. Bring originals, not photocopies, unless the DOR says copies are accepted.

Questions

How old do I need to be to take the Missouri permit test?

15.

How much does the Missouri permit test cost?

No charge for the written test or the non-CDL skills test. You pay only for the permit or license at a DOR license office (instruction permit $10.00, valid 12 months).

Can I take the Missouri permit test online?

The DOR gives the knowledge test in person: Multiple-choice written test given free at any MSHP driver examination station (all 114 counties; no appointment). You can take it on a touch-screen PC or tablet (with or without headphones), as a printed paper test, or read aloud by an examiner. Not open book. No time limit. It is one part of a four-part exam: written, vision, road sign recognition and driving skills.

Do I need an appointment?

Check the DOR's website: requirements for appointments differ by office and change often. Bring every document on the list above so you don't have to come back.
