What to bring to the Nebraska DMV permit test

Bring the right documents and you can take the knowledge and vision tests on the same visit. The official requirements change from time to time, so check the DMV's own page before you go.

For the learner's permit and knowledge test

  • One proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful status with name, date of birth and identity (e.g. certified state-issued birth certificate, valid U.S. passport)
  • Two proofs of Nebraska principal address from two different sources (a parent's documents are accepted for applicants under 21)
  • Social Security number (verified) or a valid I-94/I-94A
  • Completed data form (available on the DMV forms page)
  • Originals or certified copies only; no faxes or photocopies

Fees

  • School Learner's Permit (LPE), original: $13.00 ($8.00 + $5.00 security fee)
  • School Permit (SCP), original: $13.00 ($8.00 + $5.00 security fee)
  • Learner's Permit (LPD), original: $13.00 ($8.00 + $5.00 security fee)

The vision test

20/40 with both eyes (with or without corrective lenses) for an unrestricted license; 20/50 to 20/70 may be licensed with restrictions (e.g. G daylight only, F outside mirrors, X maximum speed); 20/80 or worse is denied. Field of vision 140 degrees or more unrestricted, 100-139 degrees with restrictions, under 100 degrees denied.

Bring your glasses or contact lenses if you wear them to see clearly.

For the road test

  • A vehicle representative of the license class, in good condition, with working brake lights and speedometer
  • Clean, working seat belts for the examiner (1964+) and driver (1973+); clean interior
  • 50-hour certification form or driver safety course completion (teens)

What happens on the road test

After you pass: your permit

  • Hold it for at least 6 months on LPE/SCP/LPD before a POP before the road test.
  • Log 50 hours of supervised driving, 10 of them at night.
  • LPD (age 15, valid 1 year): a licensed driver 21+ in the seat beside the driver
  • LPE (age 14, valid 6 months): a licensed driver 21+ beside the driver; leads to a School Permit
  • School Permit (SCP, age 14 years 2 months, for those living or attending school outside a city of 5,000+): may drive unsupervised to and from school activities carrying only resident family members; expires at 16 years 3 months
  • No use of any interactive wireless communication device while driving ($200 first offense plus points)
  • All occupants must wear seat belts ($25)
  • Before SCP or POP: a DMV-approved driver safety course, or a 50-hour certification form with at least 10 hours between sunset and sunrise, signed by a parent, guardian or licensed driver 21+

Before you go

Take a practice test or two the day before, and the exam simulator to check you can pass in the real format. Bring originals, not photocopies, unless the DMV says copies are accepted.
