Knowledge test25 questions, 20 correct to pass
PermitInstruction permit: ride only in direct visual supervision of a licensed motorcyclist 21+ with at least one year of motorcycle licensure who is also on a motorcycle; daylight only; no passengers; no freeways or high-speed roads. 18+: permit optional (not needed for the MSF course or to take the skills test), valid 6 months, renewable once in 5 years. Under 18: permit required, hold at least 6 months, valid 1 year, renewable until the 18th birthday; complete a motorcycle safety course and log 50 hours on DLD-130 (100 hours plus the DMV skills test if no course within 30 miles); parent/guardian signs the financial responsibility statement. Failing the DMV skills test two or more times permanently ends permit eligibility (a certified course is then required).
Skills test or courseDMV skills test on a closed course (cone weave and stop, 90-degree turn then U-turn, quick stop, obstacle swerve); may use any motorcycle. Testing on under 90 cc gives restriction U (90 cc or less); on a moped under 50 cc, restriction Q. An MSF-certified course (Nevada Rider) waives all DMV tests; DMV accepts certificates up to one year after completion ($8.50 license fee). Out-of-state motorcycle license holders may have the skills test waived.
Helmet lawUniversal: DOT-compliant helmets required for motorcycle drivers and passengers, moped riders and trimobile riders with handlebars and a saddle seat (NRS 486.231); not required in an enclosed-cab three-wheeler with a steering wheel.
Eye protectionFace shield or goggles required unless the motorcycle has a windshield or screen.
PassengersNot allowed for permit holders. No passenger age minimum is stated in the manual's Nevada section. Footrests must be adjustable to fit passengers.
Lane splitting or filteringIllegal: may not ride between vehicles in adjacent lanes even if stopped, and may not pass or ride next to another vehicle in the same lane (police exception, NRS 486.351). Two motorcycles/mopeds may ride abreast in one lane with both riders' consent.
