Nevada license renewal for older drivers

Drivers 65 and older receive a 4-year license. Online renewal only ages 16-70 (self-certify vision); 71+ cannot renew online. Mail renewal for 65+ allowed once every other cycle; 71+ renewing by mail must submit a physical evaluation from a doctor. Knowledge test may be required if permit expired 30+ days, 3+ moving violations in 4 years, or any suspension/revocation in 4 years; skills test possible based on driving history.

Preparing for the renewal test

If you need to take a written or signs test to renew, it covers the same handbook as new drivers' tests. Our Nevada practice tests and road signs test are free to use, and the read-aloud button can help if small print is hard to read.

Rules that may have changed since you first got your license

Some of the rules in today's Nevada handbook are newer than many drivers' first test. Worth a look before renewal:

  • Phones: All drivers: hand-held phone use for voice calls prohibited unless hands-free; texting, messaging and internet use prohibited. Emergency reports allowed if stopping is unsafe. Penalties: 1st $50 (not a moving violation), 2nd $100 + 4 demerit points, 3rd+ $250 + 4 points; doubled in work zones. Cell phone use during a drive test is an automatic failure.
  • Move over: When approaching stopped emergency, utility or service vehicles (law enforcement, tow trucks, NDOT, garbage trucks, vehicles with non-flashing blue lights, people repairing a vehicle): slow to a reasonable speed below the posted limit, proceed with caution, be prepared to stop, and if possible use a lane not adjacent to the stopped vehicle (NRS 484B.607).
  • School buses: Stop at any location for a school bus that is loading/unloading students or displaying flashing red lights; do not pass until the bus driver turns the red lights off (NRS 484B.353). On a divided highway (median or physical barrier) only traffic traveling in the same direction as the bus must stop; on all other roads traffic in both directions stops. No stopping distance is published. Bus drivers may report violators to the school district and DMV (owner gets a warning letter).
  • Alcohol: the limit for adult drivers is 0.08%.

Vision standard

Minimum acceptable vision 20/40 in at least one eye. Glasses/contacts needed to pass → restriction B.
