New Jersey MVC exam simulator

Take the knowledge test the way the MVC gives it: 50 questions picked at random from all 333 of ours, 40 correct to pass. You only see your answers at the end. Pass three in a row and you're ready for the real thing.

How the simulator works

  • Every attempt draws a new random set of 50 questions from across the handbook.
  • No feedback until you finish, as in the real test. Then you see your score and every question you missed, with the explanation and handbook reference.
  • Your results stay in this browser. After three passes in a row you'll see "You're ready".
  • The MVC doesn't publish a time limit for this test, so the clock just shows how long you've taken.

About the real New Jersey MVC test

Knowledge test at an MVC driver testing center, by appointment, after you buy an examination permit. Special learner permit applicants test through their driving school or high school program. Along with the 50 questions there is a survey question about organ donation.

  • Languages: Written tests are offered in English, Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French, Spanish, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Hindi, Albanian and Turkish. For other languages, a state-contract interpreter can be arranged at no cost to you. Check with the MVC before you go.
  • If you fail: 7 days after a failed knowledge test; 14 days after a failed road test
  • Fee: Permit fee $10 (plus $4 for the pair of red GDL decals for GDL drivers under 21). The MVC lists no separate fee for the knowledge test.
  • Audio or oral test: Oral tests are offered in English and Spanish. Applicants who cannot read in any language take the test with headphones.

On test day

  • Bring the documents on the New Jersey what-to-bring list, and check you meet the minimum age (16 (special learner permit, through an approved behind-the-wheel driver training course); 17 (examination permit)).
  • You'll take a vision test first: 20/50 visual acuity with or without corrective lenses (basic license). One eye only: that eye must meet 20/50 and a physician must sign documentation. CDL: 20/40 in both eyes and must distinguish red, green and amber. Bring your glasses or contacts if you wear them.
  • Read each question and every answer to the end before choosing; watch for words like "not" and "except".
  • Review the hardest questions the night before: exact numbers are where most points are lost.
