Key rules by chapter
A few of the rules from each chapter that come up in our practice questions:
1. Customer Service Guide: Driver licensing, getting your license, license services, age-restricted licenses
- At 17 an applicant may be issued a license with full privileges without having held an intermediate license or other permit.
- At 16½, full privileges are possible with a six-month-old intermediate license, no suspension, and an approved driver education course.
- The driver must be accompanied by a person 18 or older who has a valid license for the type of vehicle, sitting in the front passenger seat.
2. Additional driver/motoring services
- An intermediate license automatically expires 30 days after the holder's 17th birthday.
- An Administrative Per Se suspension for a DWUI arrest with 0.08 or more lasts 90 days.
- Dismissal of the DWUI in court will not affect the Administrative Per Se suspension.
3. Losing the privilege to drive (suspensions, revocation, SR-22, ignition interlock)
- Generally the reinstatement fee for suspensions is $50; for a child support suspension it is $5.
- You are allowed up to three moving violations in 12 months; a fourth leads to a 90-day suspension.
- The suspension is 90 days, with an additional 90 days for each additional moving violation in the 12-month period.
4. Safety laws/issues (safety belts, child restraints, Driver License Compact, alcohol and drugs, police stops)
- Driving under the influence of alcohol is the major cause of almost half of the crashes in which someone is killed.
- It takes 30 to 40 minutes to totally absorb the alcohol in a single drink.
- Because of reduced ability to execute, a drinking driver at 55 mph drives an additional 32 feet or more before braking.
5. Rules of the road (speed, right of way, roundabouts, braking, required stops, lanes, turning, backing, passing, parking, Interstate)
- Secondary highways are 70 mph unless otherwise posted.
- Interstate highways are 80 mph or 75 mph unless otherwise posted.
- Residential and business areas are 30 mph unless otherwise posted.
6. Traffic signs, signals and road markings; railroad crossings
- Signal and move into the proper lane a mile or more before the exit; never slow on the Interstate itself.
- Solid yellow lines indicate no passing or lane changing unless making a left turn into or from an alley, private road or driveway.
- Get all four wheels well off the road, use flashers (flares at night), don't exit on the traffic side, and raise the hood/trunk or tie a white cloth to the antenna.
7. Traffic crashes
- Contact the police if there is injury, death or property damage of $1,000 or more; police submit the report to WYDOT.
- Give aid and send for an ambulance, but do not move an injured person unless there is danger of another crash.
- Stop at or near the scene and stay there until police arrive and question everyone involved.
8. Sharing the road safely; safe driving tips (IPDE); special driving conditions; cell phones
- On a two-lane road posted 45 mph or greater, slow to a speed 20 mph less than the posted limit.
- Merge into the lane farthest from the vehicle, or at least one lane apart, unless directed otherwise by police.
- It applies when the vehicle is stopped or moving at less than 20 mph on or within three feet of the roadway with lights activated.
9. Titling and registration locations; Definitions; Traffic signs and signals
- You may turn right on red after stopping and yielding unless prohibited, and left from a one-way onto a one-way street.
- A moped has a motor of 50cc or less, no more than two-brake horsepower, and a maximum speed of 30 mph on level ground.
- A resident includes anyone who remains in the jurisdiction for 120 days or more, among other criteria.
How to study the handbook
Read one chapter, then take a practice test. Every answer explanation names the handbook section it comes from, so when you get one wrong, go back to that section. Pay most attention to exact numbers and to the rules specific to Wyoming, which are where most people lose points.
