What to bring to the Wyoming WYDOT permit test
Bring the right documents and you can take the knowledge and vision tests on the same visit. The official requirements change from time to time, so check the WYDOT's own page before you go.
For the learner's permit and knowledge test
- One proof of legal presence (certified original): state-certified birth certificate (not a hospital certificate), valid U.S. passport or passport card, Consular Report of Birth Abroad, Certificate of Citizenship or Certificate of Naturalization
- One proof of identity (e.g. U.S. state driver license or ID card, certified birth certificate, passport, other government ID)
- Proof of name change if your current name differs (marriage certificate changes last name only; other changes need a court order)
- Two proofs of Wyoming residency showing your name and physical address (no P.O. box), no more than 45 days old and from different sources; a parent or guardian may provide them for a minor
- Social Security number on the application (proof such as a Social Security card or W-2 is recommended but not required)
- Parent or legal guardian signature for applicants under 18
Fees
- Class C license or permit (new): $45
- Class C license or permit renewal: $35
- Restricted license or permit: $25
- Motorcycle (added to class of license): $11
- Duplicate driver license: $25
- Identification card: $10
The vision test
20/40 acuity with both eyes, with or without glasses, and a combined horizontal field of at least 120 degrees. Worse than 20/40 but at least 20/100 requires a driving skills test. Failing the screening requires a vision statement from an eye specialist.
Bring your glasses or contact lenses if you wear them to see clearly.
For the road test
- Your own vehicle: legally licensed, registered and insured
- Seat belts for driver and front-seat passenger
- Working brakes and brake lights, head and tail lights, turn signals, horn, rearview and driver-side mirrors
- Doors that open from inside and outside; windshield without vision-obstructing cracks; good wipers and tires
- Schedule in advance (oneWYO or local office) where required
After you pass: your permit
- Hold it for at least 10 days (learner's permit must be held at least 10 days before applying for an intermediate permit or full privileges) before the road test.
- Log 50 hours of supervised driving, 10 of them at night.
- Must be accompanied by a person 18 or older with a valid license at least equivalent to the vehicle being driven, in the front passenger seat
- Learner's permit is valid for one year and may be renewed as often as needed; it must be held at least 10 days before applying for an intermediate permit or full driving privileges
- Must pass the written test and vision screening when applying; parent or legal guardian signs for applicants under 18
- 50 hours of behind-the-wheel driving including 10 at night (certified by a parent or guardian) are required for an intermediate permit
- Restricted (hardship) permit for ages 14-15: approved by the Wyoming Highway Patrol; valid 60 days, must be held at least 10 days before applying for the restricted 'RC' license; driving only 5 a.m.-8 p.m. within 50 miles of home with a licensed adult 18+
Before you go
Take a practice test or two the day before, and the exam simulator to check you can pass in the real format. Bring originals, not photocopies, unless the WYDOT says copies are accepted.
