Wyoming WYDOT road test: what to expect
Required for first-time applicants who have never been licensed, and for the intermediate permit. The route includes intersections, stop lights and other normal traffic situations. The examiner may waive it for an approved driver education certificate (30 hours classroom, 6 hours behind the wheel; honored up to 2 years), but waiving is up to the examiner, and anyone who previously failed a state driving test must retest with a state examiner. Wait at least 24 hours after a failed skills test; the examiner may set a longer wait. Interpreters are allowed (not for CDL). Many offices require you to schedule in advance (oneWYO or by phone).
What the examiner checks
- Intersections
- Stop lights
- Normal traffic situations
- Safe driving maneuvers
Mistakes that end the test
- Failure to obey state law
Your car
- Licensed, registered and insured
- Driver and front passenger seat belts
- Working brakes, brake lights, head/tail lights, turn signals, horn, mirrors
- Doors open inside and out
- No vision-obstructing windshield cracks
- Wipers and tires not frayed or bulging
After you pass
Drivers under 17, or 16½ with an approved driver education course and an intermediate license held 6 months get a provisional or junior license first. Its restrictions:
- No more than one passenger under 18 who is not immediate family (intermediate motorcycle permit: no passengers)
- Driver and all passengers must wear seat belts
- Driving only between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. unless an exception form (medical necessity, work, school/school activity/organized youth sports/religious activity) is signed by the right person and carried; no form is needed for a true medical emergency. Exception forms cover specific events and are not blanket permissions
- These restrictions do not apply when the front-seat passenger is 18 or older and holds a valid license with full privileges
- Must be held at least six months or until age 17; full privileges at 16½ need six months on the intermediate permit plus an approved driver education course
- Any violation: 30-day suspension. The intermediate license expires 30 days after the 17th birthday
How to prepare
- Practise in the car you'll take the test in, including parking and backing up.
- Drive the kinds of roads near the test site with your supervising driver: intersections, lane changes, school zones.
- Check the car the day before: lights, signals, horn, brakes, mirrors, tires, seat belts, and current registration and insurance documents.
- On the day, signal every turn and lane change, check mirrors and blind spots visibly, and come to full stops behind the line.
