How the simulator works

  • Every attempt draws a new random set of 40 questions from across the handbook.
  • No feedback until you finish, as in the real test. Then you see your score and every question you missed, with the explanation and handbook reference.
  • Your results stay in this browser. After three passes in a row you'll see "You're ready".
  • The OMV doesn't publish a time limit for this test, so the clock just shows how long you've taken.

About the real Louisiana OMV test

Multiple-choice test on traffic signs, signals, safe driving and Louisiana law, taken from the Driver's Guide; given on a computer in most offices. For teens the knowledge and skills tests are administered by the driver education provider. A Temporary Instructional Permit (TIP) is required before taking the knowledge test.

  • Languages: If you don't read English well, you may bring a translator for non-CDL knowledge tests.
  • Fee: OMV lists no separate state knowledge-test fee. Driving schools and third-party testers set their own fees. The learner's permit costs $32.25, plus an office service fee of up to $6-8.

On test day

  • Bring the documents on the Louisiana what-to-bring list, and check you meet the minimum age (15 (learner's permit); 14 for the Class E Temporary Instructional Permit (TIP) used only during driver education).
  • You'll take a vision test first: 20/40 in one or both eyes (minimum standard). Failing applicants get a vision report for a specialist to complete. Corrective-lens restriction code 01. Bring your glasses or contacts if you wear them.
  • Read each question and every answer to the end before choosing; watch for words like "not" and "except".
  • Review the hardest questions the night before: exact numbers are where most points are lost.
