How the simulator works

  • Every attempt draws a new random set of 35 questions from across the handbook.
  • No feedback until you finish, as in the real test. Then you see your score and every question you missed, with the explanation and handbook reference.
  • Your results stay in this browser. After three passes in a row you'll see "You're ready".
  • The DMV doesn't publish a time limit for this test, so the clock just shows how long you've taken.

About the real Oregon DMV test

Multiple choice. Take it online through DMV2U on a desktop or laptop with a keyboard, mouse and webcam (no phones or tablets), or on a touch-screen at a DMV office (standby or appointment; offices stop testing 1 hour before closing). Testers under 18 taking it online need a proctor 21 or older.

  • Languages: Arabic, Chinese (simplified Mandarin), English, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish and Vietnamese, read and heard, online and in DMV offices. Check with DMV before you go.
  • Attempts: In an office: if you fail, you may test again the same day, depending on office testing resources. Online: at most 2 attempts in any 24-hour period and 4 online attempts in total per test type; after that you must test at a DMV office.
  • If you fail: None required (same day possible). If you are caught cheating, you can't test for 90 days.
  • Fee: $7 each time you take the test
  • Audio or oral test: Available with or without audio; you may bring your own earbuds or headphones.

On test day

  • Bring the documents on the Oregon what-to-bring list, and check you meet the minimum age (15).
  • You'll take a vision test first: You need visual acuity of 20/70 or better looking through both eyes (or through the one eye with usable vision; with two usable eyes, one eye at 20/70 or better is enough) and a field of vision of at least 110 degrees. If your best eye is worse than 20/40 but no worse than 20/70, DMV restricts you to daylight driving unless a licensed vision specialist advises otherwise in writing. DMV tests your eyesight at no charge. If you test wearing glasses or contacts, you must wear them to drive. If you fail, you get a form for a licensed vision specialist. Drivers 65 and older must have their vision tested in person at renewal. Bring your glasses or contacts if you wear them.
  • Read each question and every answer to the end before choosing; watch for words like "not" and "except".
  • Review the hardest questions the night before: exact numbers are where most points are lost.
