After you pass
Drivers under 18 get a provisional or junior license first. Its restrictions:

- First 6 months: no passengers under 20 who are not immediate family
- Second 6 months: no more than 3 passengers under 20 who are not immediate family
- First year: no driving midnight to 5 a.m. unless driving between home and work, between home and a school event with no other transportation, for employment, or with a licensed driver at least 25
- Passenger limits do not apply with a certified traffic safety education instructor or a parent, stepparent or legal guardian with valid driving privileges
- Passenger and night limits end at 18 or after 1 year with the provisional license, whichever comes first
How to prepare
- Practise in the car you'll take the test in, including parking and backing up.
- Drive the kinds of roads near the test site with your supervising driver: intersections, lane changes, school zones.
- Check the car the day before: lights, signals, horn, brakes, mirrors, tires, seat belts, and current registration and insurance documents.
- On the day, signal every turn and lane change, check mirrors and blind spots visibly, and come to full stops behind the line.
