What to bring to the Oregon DMV permit test

Bring the right documents and you can take the knowledge and vision tests on the same visit. The official requirements change from time to time, so check the DMV's own page before you go.

For the learner's permit and knowledge test

  • Proof of identity and date of birth (original or certified copy, e.g. U.S. birth certificate, passport, permanent resident card)
  • Proof of current residence address
  • Social Security Number, or electronic certification that you do not have one
  • Parent or legal guardian signature for applicants under 18 (in person or form 735-173DP)
  • Under 18: parent certifies school enrollment, or show a diploma/GED
  • Additional documents and $30 extra if you want REAL ID
  • Fees (test fee paid separately from issuance fee)

Fees

  • Class C knowledge test (each attempt): $7
  • Class C instruction permit: $30
  • REAL ID Class C instruction permit: $60

The vision test

You need visual acuity of 20/70 or better looking through both eyes (or through the one eye with usable vision; with two usable eyes, one eye at 20/70 or better is enough) and a field of vision of at least 110 degrees. If your best eye is worse than 20/40 but no worse than 20/70, DMV restricts you to daylight driving unless a licensed vision specialist advises otherwise in writing. DMV tests your eyesight at no charge. If you test wearing glasses or contacts, you must wear them to drive. If you fail, you get a form for a licensed vision specialist. Drivers 65 and older must have their vision tested in person at renewal.

Bring your glasses or contact lenses if you wear them to see clearly.

For the road test

  • Passenger vehicle with current registration (stickers on front and rear plates)
  • Proof of current liability insurance for that vehicle
  • Proof of identity, date of birth and full legal name (e.g. your permit)
  • Proof of residence address if not on your identity documents
  • Separate payments for the $45 drive test fee and the $64 license issuance fee

What happens on the road test

After you pass: your permit

  • Hold it for at least 6 months (under 18, before a provisional license); out-of-state permit time counts before the road test.
  • Log 100 hours of supervised driving.
  • Must be accompanied by a licensed driver at least 21 years old sitting beside you
  • Supervised hours only count if the supervisor is at least 21 and has held valid driving privileges for at least 3 years
  • 100 hours of supervised driving, or 50 hours plus an ODOT-approved traffic safety education course (proof sent to DMV)
  • Under 18: no use of a mobile communication device while driving, including hands-free
  • Provisional instruction permit is valid for 2 years

Before you go

Take a practice test or two the day before, and the exam simulator to check you can pass in the real format. Bring originals, not photocopies, unless the DMV says copies are accepted.
