One-Direction Large Arrow sign

Placed on the outside of a sharp turn or curve, facing approaching traffic, to show the direction the road goes.

What to do

Slow down and turn in the direction of the arrow.

If you see this arrow straight ahead of you, you are at the turn: you should already be at a safe speed and steering in the direction it points.

Where it's used

Section 2C.10 allows the One-Direction Large Arrow (W1-6) to back up a Turn or Reverse Turn sign, or to stand in for Chevron signs or delineators where only a few can be seen or fitted. It is a horizontal black-on-yellow rectangle with one arrow pointing left or right, installed on the outside of the turn at about a right angle to oncoming traffic. It must not be used where the road does not change direction (such as at median ends), and a Confirmation Advisory Speed (W13-1aP) plaque may be added to it.

Don't confuse it with

  • Two-Direction Large Arrow: The two-direction arrow points both ways at the end of a T-intersection, while the one-direction arrow shows a single turn direction on a curve.
  • Chevron Alignment: Chevrons are a series of small vertical signs along the curve, while the Large Arrow is a single wide sign.
  • Turn: The Turn sign is an advance warning diamond, while the Large Arrow marks the turn itself.
