Turn sign
A sharp turn ahead in the direction of the arrow. A Turn sign is used instead of a Curve sign when the advisory speed for the bend is 30 mph or less.
What to do
Slow down before the turn, to the advisory speed if one is posted, and keep in your lane.
Brake before the turn, not in it, and slow to any advisory speed shown on the plaque.
Image shows the right-hand version (W1-1R).
Where it's used
Under Section 2C.07 the Curve sign is the default horizontal-alignment warning, but a Turn (W1-1) sign should be used instead when the curve's advisory speed is 30 mph or less. Like other warning signs it is a black-on-yellow diamond, with a sharply bent arrow showing the direction (W1-1L or W1-1R). It is often paired with an Advisory Speed plaque below it and may be backed up by a One-Direction Large Arrow or Chevron signs at the turn itself.
Don't confuse it with
- Curve: The Curve sign has a gently bending arrow for a curve with an advisory speed above 30 mph, while the Turn sign's right-angle arrow means a sharper bend of 30 mph or less.
- Reverse Turn: Reverse Turn shows two sharp turns in opposite directions, while the Turn sign shows only one.
- One-Direction Large Arrow: The Large Arrow is placed at the turn itself on its outside edge, while the Turn sign is placed in advance.
