Reverse Turn sign
Two sharp turns in opposite directions, separated by less than 600 feet; the first turn is in the direction the arrow starts.
What to do
Slow down and be ready to steer one way then the other.
Slow down enough for the first turn and be ready to steer straight into the second one right after it.
Image shows W1-3R (first turn to the right).
Where it's used
Section 2C.07 says a Reverse Turn (W1-3) sign should be used instead of two Turn signs where two changes in direction go opposite ways and are separated by less than 600 feet of straight road. It is a black-on-yellow diamond whose arrow shows two sharp bends; the L or R version tells you which way the first turn goes. An Advisory Speed plaque is often mounted below it.
Don't confuse it with
- Reverse Curve: Reverse Curve uses gentle bends for curves above a 30 mph advisory speed, while Reverse Turn uses sharp right-angle bends for slower turns.
- Turn: The Turn sign warns of one sharp turn, while Reverse Turn warns of two in opposite directions.
- Winding Road: Winding Road is used for three or more changes in direction, not just two.

On state permit tests
Our questions for 2 states ask about this sign, including Missouri and Nebraska.
Test yourself
A reverse turn sign warns of two turns in opposite directions. What does the guide note about the second turn? (Missouri practice test)
- It is always gentler
- It may be sharper than the first
- It is always a right turn
- It has no speed advisory
Show answer
It may be sharper than the first. The second turn may be sharper than the first; recommended maximum speed is 30 mph or less.
What does a reverse turn sign mean? (Nebraska practice test)
- Winding road for miles
- The road turns sharply one way, then the other, just ahead
- U-turn ahead
- Detour
Show answer
The road turns sharply one way, then the other, just ahead. Just ahead, the road turns sharply right then left (or left then right).
