Washington DOL exam simulator
Take the knowledge test the way the DOL gives it: 40 questions picked at random from all 302 of ours, 32 correct to pass. You only see your answers at the end. Pass three in a row and you're ready for the real thing.
40 questions · 32 to pass
How the simulator works
- Every attempt draws a new random set of 40 questions from across the handbook.
- No feedback until you finish, as in the real test. Then you see your score and every question you missed, with the explanation and handbook reference.
- Your results stay in this browser. After three passes in a row you'll see "You're ready".
- The DOL doesn't publish a time limit for this test, so the clock just shows how long you've taken.
About the real Washington DOL test
Written multiple-choice test, taken in person at an approved driver training school or a DOL testing location; the fee is set by the testing location. A passing score is good for 2 years, which is how long you then have to pass the skills exam.
- Languages: 12 languages: English, Spanish, Traditional Chinese, Korean, Russian, Vietnamese, Japanese, Arabic, Simplified Chinese, Punjabi, Tagalog and Ukrainian. Check that your school offers your language.
- If you fail: If you don't pass, there may be a waiting period before you can retest.
- Fee: Set by the testing location (not by DOL).
On test day
- Bring the documents on the Washington what-to-bring list, and check you meet the minimum age (15 if enrolled in an approved driver training course (apply 1-10 days before the course starts); 15½ without a course (but then no license until 18)).
- You'll take a vision test first: Vision screening at a licensing office. If your acuity is worse than 20/40 (both eyes together, with or without glasses or contacts), you need an eye exam. Vision that can't be corrected to 20/100 fails, and vision that can't be corrected to 20/70 fails for night driving. Corrective lenses are noted on the license. Bring your glasses or contacts if you wear them.
- Read each question and every answer to the end before choosing; watch for words like "not" and "except".
- Review the hardest questions the night before: exact numbers are where most points are lost.
