Bridge Ices Before Road sign

The bridge surface may freeze before the road does in cold weather.

What to do

In cold or freezing conditions, slow down before the bridge and avoid sudden braking or steering on it.

In cold weather, slow down before the bridge and avoid braking or steering sharply on it, even if the road before it is clear.

Where it's used

Section 2C.30 allows the BRIDGE ICES BEFORE ROAD (W8-13) sign before bridges to warn of winter conditions. It is a black-on-yellow diamond word sign. It may be removed or covered during seasons when the warning does not apply.

Don't confuse it with

  • Slippery When Wet: Slippery When Wet is a symbol sign for slick pavement in general, while this sign is specifically about bridges freezing first.
  • Narrow Bridge: NARROW BRIDGE warns about the bridge's width, not ice.
