In-Street Pedestrian Crossing sign

A small sign placed in the roadway itself (on the center line, a lane line or a median) at an unsignalized crosswalk to remind drivers of the law on yielding to pedestrians there.

What to do

Watch for people in or entering the crosswalk and yield (or stop, where the sign and state law say STOP) to them. Do not hit or drive around the sign into the crosswalk.

Treat this sign as a reminder that pedestrians in the crosswalk have priority, slow down, and keep your vehicle well clear of the flexible sign post.

The STATE LAW legend is optional; the pedestrian symbol area may be yellow or fluorescent yellow-green.

Where it's used

Section 2B.20 allows the In-Street Pedestrian Crossing sign (R1-6 or R1-6a) to remind road users of right-of-way law at an unsignalized crosswalk; it must stand in the roadway at the crosswalk on the center line, a lane line, an edge line or a median island, never at the roadside, with its top no more than 4 feet above the surface. At uncontrolled crossings it supplements a Pedestrian Crossing (W11-2) sign with a downward arrow plaque, and it may not be used at crosswalks controlled by a traffic signal or pedestrian hybrid beacon. The sign is white with a STOP or YIELD symbol (or word) above a pedestrian symbol on a yellow or fluorescent yellow-green panel, may show STATE LAW at the top, and has an overhead (R1-9) and trail-crossing (R1-6d/e) version.

Don't confuse it with

  • Yield Here to Pedestrians: Yield Here to Pedestrians is post-mounted at the roadside before the crosswalk, while the in-street sign sits in the middle of the road at the crosswalk.
  • Pedestrian Warning: The Pedestrian Warning diamond is a warning sign, whereas the in-street sign is a regulatory reminder of the law to yield or stop.
