Night Speed Limit sign
Used where the speed limit at night is different from the daytime limit. It should be white on black and may be mounted with or below the regular Speed Limit sign.
What to do
After dark, obey the lower night speed limit shown.
Once it is dark, follow the lower white-on-black night limit even if the daytime sign above it shows a higher number.
Commons file is titled with the older code R2-3; the 11th Edition code is R2-3P.
Where it's used
Section 2B.23 requires both limits to be posted where the day and night speed limits differ. The Night Speed Limit plaque should be reversed colours, a white retroreflective legend and border on black, so it stands out from the black-on-white day limit. It may be combined with, or mounted below, the regular Speed Limit (R2-1) sign.
Don't confuse it with
- Speed Limit: The regular Speed Limit sign is black on white and applies at all times unless a night limit is posted; the night plaque is white on black and applies after dark.
- Combined Maximum and Minimum Speed Limits: The combined sign shows a maximum and a minimum speed, not a separate limit for night-time.
