Yield Here to Pedestrians sign

Placed with a yield line 20 to 50 feet before a marked crosswalk on an uncontrolled multi-lane road, so that a vehicle stopping for a pedestrian does not hide that person from drivers in the next lane.

What to do

When a pedestrian is crossing, yield at the yield line (the row of white triangles), not right at the crosswalk, so other drivers can see the pedestrian.

If someone is using the crosswalk ahead, stop at the yield line well back from it so drivers in the next lane can see the pedestrian too.

Image is the left-arrow version (R1-5L). Companion Stop Here for Pedestrians (R1-5b) is used only where state law requires stopping.

Where it's used

Section 2B.19 requires the R1-5 series wherever yield or stop lines are placed in advance of a marked crosswalk that crosses an uncontrolled multi-lane approach, normally 20 to 50 feet before the crosswalk; parking should be prohibited between the line and the crosswalk. It is a white rectangle showing the yield triangle and an arrow toward the line; the Stop Here for Pedestrians version (R1-5b) may be used only where law requires drivers to stop, and school (R1-5a/R1-5c) and trail (R1-5d/R1-5e) versions exist. The STATE LAW legend is not allowed on these signs, and they should not be used at roundabout crosswalks.

Don't confuse it with

  • In-Street Pedestrian Crossing: The in-street sign stands in the roadway at the crosswalk itself, whereas Yield Here to Pedestrians is beside the road at the advance yield line.
  • Yield Line: The yield line is the painted row of triangles the sign points to; the sign tells you that the line is where to yield to pedestrians.
  • Pedestrian Warning: The yellow Pedestrian Warning diamond only warns of a crossing, while the R1-5 sign is regulatory and tells you exactly where to yield.
