Fines Higher plaque sign
Gives notice that traffic fines are increased within the zone, such as a work zone or school zone. An END HIGHER FINES ZONE sign marks where the zone ends.
What to do
Obey all limits carefully; violations in this zone cost more.
Expect stricter enforcement and bigger penalties in the zone, so obey the speed limit and other signs carefully until you pass the END sign.
May be omitted where the higher-fines zone is set by statute (2B.25 Para 3).
Where it's used
Section 2B.25 requires notice when higher fines apply in a zone, either with a BEGIN HIGHER FINES ZONE (R2-10) sign or this FINES HIGHER plaque, mounted under a regulatory or warning sign in a work zone, school zone or other designated zone; an END HIGHER FINES ZONE (R2-11) sign marks the end. The plaque is a black legend and border on a white rectangle. Alternate legends include FINES DOUBLE (R2-6aP) and $XX FINE (R2-6bP), and further plaques may give times or say WHEN CHILDREN (WORKERS) ARE PRESENT.
Don't confuse it with
- Road Work Ahead: ROAD WORK AHEAD is an orange warning sign about the work zone, while FINES HIGHER is a white regulatory plaque about the penalty.
- School plaque: The fluorescent yellow-green SCHOOL plaque identifies a school zone, while FINES HIGHER only states that penalties are increased in the zone.
