Loose Gravel sign

Loose gravel on the road surface ahead.

What to do

Slow down and avoid sudden moves; gravel reduces traction and can chip windshields.

Slow down, avoid sudden braking or turns and leave extra space so stones thrown up by other vehicles do not hit your windshield.

Where it's used

Section 2C.30 allows the LOOSE GRAVEL (W8-7) sign to warn of loose gravel on the road surface. It is a black-on-yellow diamond word sign placed before the affected section, with more signs along the road where the condition continues. It is one of the surface condition signs alongside ROUGH ROAD, UNEVEN LANES and Slippery When Wet.

Don't confuse it with

  • Pavement Ends: PAVEMENT ENDS means the paved surface stops entirely, while LOOSE GRAVEL warns of gravel lying on the road.
  • Slippery When Wet: Slippery When Wet warns of slick pavement, especially in rain, rather than loose stones.
  • Fresh Oil (Tar): The orange FRESH OIL sign warns of new oil or tar from road work.
