Soft Shoulder sign

The road shoulder is soft and may not support a vehicle.

What to do

Stay on the pavement; avoid using the shoulder except in an emergency.

Keep your wheels on the pavement, and if you must stop, pull off only where the ground looks firm.

Where it's used

Section 2C.29 allows the SOFT SHOULDER (W8-4) sign to warn that the shoulder is soft and may not support a vehicle. It is a black-on-yellow diamond word sign. Related shoulder signs in the same section are LOW SHOULDER, Shoulder Drop-Off, NO SHOULDER and SHOULDER ENDS.

Don't confuse it with

  • Low Shoulder: LOW SHOULDER warns that the shoulder is lower than the lane, while SOFT SHOULDER warns that it is too soft to hold a vehicle.
  • Shoulder Drop-Off: Shoulder Drop-Off warns of a drop of more than 3 inches at the pavement edge, not soft ground.
  • Shoulder Work: The orange SHOULDER WORK sign warns of temporary work on the shoulder.
