Bike Lane sign
Used only with a marked bicycle lane, usually at its beginning and before its end.
What to do
Do not drive or park in the bike lane. Check for bicyclists and merge into the bike lane only where allowed and safe before a right turn.
Do not drive or park in the bike lane, and before turning right check your mirror and blind spot for bicyclists coming up beside you.
Whether drivers may enter a bike lane to turn depends on state law.
Where it's used
Section 9B.04 says the Bike Lane sign and its BIKE LANE, AHEAD and ENDS plaques may be used only with a marked bicycle lane, and they should be placed at the start of the lane and before its downstream end, with more along the way if needed. It is a white rectangle with a black bicycle symbol and the words BIKE LANE. BIKE LANE plaques can also be added above overhead lane-control signs to show what movements bicyclists in that lane may make.
Don't confuse it with
- Bike Route: The green Bike Route sign is a guide sign for a recommended route that may have no separate lane, while Bike Lane marks a lane reserved for bicycles.
- Bicycles Allowed Use of Full Lane: Bicycles May Use Full Lane means cyclists share your lane, whereas Bike Lane marks a separate lane for them.
- Shared-Lane Marking (sharrow): The sharrow marks a shared travel lane, while a bike lane is set apart by a white line and bicycle symbols.
