Bump sign
A sharp rise in the road profile ahead.
What to do
Slow down to keep control of your vehicle.
Slow down before the bump so your vehicle does not bounce or lose control, especially with passengers or a load.
Where it's used
Section 2C.26 says a BUMP (W8-1) sign should be used in advance of a sharp rise in the road profile. It is a black-on-yellow diamond word sign. An Advisory Speed plaque may be mounted below it.
Don't confuse it with
- Dip: DIP warns of a sharp low spot, the opposite of a bump.
- Speed Hump: SPEED HUMP warns of a deliberately built traffic-calming hump, while BUMP warns of a sharp rise in the road itself.
- Hill: The Hill sign warns of a long or steep downgrade, not a short sharp rise.
