Speed Hump sign

A raised section of pavement built to slow traffic is ahead.

What to do

Slow to the advisory speed if one is posted.

Slow to the speed on the plaque before the hump and expect more humps and pedestrians in traffic-calmed streets.

Where it's used

Section 2C.27 says the SPEED HUMP (W17-1) sign should be used in advance of a raised hump built into the road to slow traffic. It is a black-on-yellow diamond word sign. If used, it should have an Advisory Speed plaque below it showing the recommended speed over the hump.

Don't confuse it with

  • Bump: BUMP warns of a sharp rise in the road surface itself, while SPEED HUMP warns of a hump deliberately built to slow traffic.
  • Dip: DIP warns of a sharp low spot rather than a raised hump.
