Cross Traffic Does Not Stop plaque sign
Mounted under a STOP sign where drivers might mistake the intersection for an all-way stop.
What to do
After stopping, wait for a safe gap; cross traffic will not stop for you.
After stopping, do not expect cross traffic to stop for you; wait for a gap big enough to clear the intersection safely.
Where it's used
Section 2C.66 allows the CROSS TRAFFIC DOES NOT STOP (W4-4P) plaque under a STOP sign where drivers might wrongly treat the intersection as an all-way stop, and it must be mounted below the STOP sign. It is a horizontal black-on-yellow warning plaque. Variants say TRAFFIC FROM LEFT (RIGHT) DOES NOT STOP (W4-4aP) or ONCOMING TRAFFIC DOES NOT STOP (W4-4bP), which should be used where all but one approach has a STOP sign.
Don't confuse it with
- All-Way plaque: The ALL-WAY plaque is white and means every approach stops, while this yellow plaque means cross traffic will not stop.
- Stop: The STOP sign above it is what requires you to stop; the plaque only tells you that the other road does not.

A plaque under a stop sign reads CROSS TRAFFIC DOES NOT STOP. What should you do? (Indiana practice test)
- Stop and wait for a safe gap; cross traffic will not stop for you
- Treat it as a four-way stop
- Proceed without stopping
- Yield only to pedestrians
Show answer
Stop and wait for a safe gap; cross traffic will not stop for you. The plaque tells you that traffic on the cross street does not have to stop.
A plate beneath a stop sign says other traffic does not stop. What does it mean? (Mississippi practice test)
- It is not a four-way stop; cross traffic has the right-of-way and won't stop
- It is a four-way stop
- Stop is optional
- Turn right only
Show answer
It is not a four-way stop; cross traffic has the right-of-way and won't stop. This plate tells you that although you must stop, it's not a four-way stop; other lanes won't stop.
