Detour Ahead sign

Traffic will be detoured onto another road or route ahead.

What to do

Prepare to follow the detour signs.

Get ready to follow the orange DETOUR markers and arrows, and slow down for the turn onto the detour route.

Where it's used

Section 6H.04 says the DETOUR (W20-2) sign should be used in advance of a point where traffic is sent onto a different road or route. It is a black-on-orange diamond work zone sign. The distance line may read AHEAD, XX FEET or XX MILES, and route signs with DETOUR markers then guide drivers along the detour.

Don't confuse it with

  • Detour: The rectangular DETOUR arrow sign (M4-8 series) shows the route to follow, while this diamond warns that a detour is coming.
  • Road Closed Ahead: ROAD CLOSED AHEAD warns that the road is closed; DETOUR AHEAD warns that you will be sent onto another route.
